Modern Homeschooling: What It Is and Why More Families Are Choosing It
If you are a parent with a child in the public school system, chances are you have thought about homeschooling at some point.
Maybe it crossed your mind during a stressful school year.
Maybe you wondered if there was a better way to support your child’s learning.
Or maybe you briefly considered it and quickly thought:
“There is no way I could make that work.”
The truth is, homeschooling today may look very different from what many people imagine.
That’s why I created Modern Homeschooling.
Modern Homeschooling is part of my broader business, Modern Housekeeping, which was built around a simple idea: the way families live, work, and learn has changed. The systems that once supported households and education often haven’t kept up with those changes.
Just like modern households require new ways of managing responsibilities, education is evolving too.
My Background in Education
I am a former educator and math coach who spent more than 10 years working in both public and private schools. During those years, I also gained a deeper understanding of the challenges families face.
Many of the families I worked with were dual-income households. Others had parents working multiple jobs. Between work schedules, extracurricular activities, and everyday responsibilities, many parents were simply trying to keep up with the pace of life.
At the same time, I began asking myself a personal question:
How will I one day balance the demands of work, home life, and my kid’s learning?
I love teaching and supporting students, but over time the structure of the traditional school system became increasingly difficult. Teachers were balancing large ranges of academic levels in one classroom, strict pacing requirements, growing testing demands, and administrative expectations.
Then COVID happened, and education changed dramatically. It became clear to me that the traditional education system was evolving and many families were beginning to look for new options.
Eventually, I made the difficult decision to step away from public school teaching. But I still wanted to support families and children in meaningful ways.
That search led me to create Modern Housekeeping.
Discovering the Growth of Homeschooling
While continuing to work with families and participate in parent communities online, I began noticing something interesting.
More and more parents were asking questions about homeschooling.
One family in particular, who lives in Florida, introduced me to the scholarship programs available to families who want alternative education options. As soon as I learned about these programs, I immediately began researching them.
What I discovered was incredible.
Florida has created scholarship opportunities that allow families to choose how their children learn—whether that means private school, homeschooling, or a customized combination of educational resources.
For families who want more flexibility in their child’s education, these scholarships open the door to possibilities that did not exist just a few years ago.
How Homeschooling Has Changed
When many people think about homeschooling, they imagine one parent teaching from a single curriculum at home every day.
But in many places today—especially in Florida—that is no longer the only option.
Programs like the PEP (Personalized Education Program) scholarship allow families to personalize their child’s education using scholarship funds.
Families can combine different learning opportunities such as:
• hybrid homeschool programs
• co-ops and learning communities
• tutors
• enrichment classes
• online programs
• curriculum used at home
This flexibility allows parents to build an education that fits their child’s learning style, pace, and interests.
It’s truly a beautiful opportunity.
But it also creates a new challenge.
The Puzzle Many Parents Are Trying to Solve
When families begin homeschooling, they often realize there are many moving pieces to consider.
Parents commonly ask questions like:
• How do we choose the right curriculum?
• What programs are available in our area?
• How do we structure our week?
• What are the scholarship requirements?
• How do reimbursements work?
• What documentation do we need to turn in?
There are many great resources available to support homeschool families, but navigating everything can feel overwhelming—especially for parents who are just getting started.
In many ways, modern homeschooling can feel like putting together a puzzle without seeing the full picture yet.
This is exactly where Modern Homeschooling comes in.
What Modern Homeschooling Is
Modern Homeschooling is the part of my work focused on helping families organize the structure and logistics of homeschooling.
As an educator and Choice Navigator, my goal is not to control curriculum or direct how a family educates their child.
Instead, I support parents in building a clear framework that makes homeschooling feel manageable and sustainable.
Support may include helping families:
• understand education options available through the PEP scholarship
• explore curriculum and learning resources
• outline a high-level learning plan
• organize a realistic weekly homeschool structure
• navigate scholarship requirements and documentation
When families have a clear structure in place, homeschooling becomes much easier to manage—and much more enjoyable.
Who Modern Homeschooling Is For
Modern Homeschooling is designed for families who are:
• new to homeschooling
• using the PEP scholarship
• homeschooling elementary students (K–5)
• feeling overwhelmed by the number of options available
Many parents simply want reassurance that they are setting up their homeschool in a way that works for both their child and their family.
My role is to help make that process clearer.
The Future of Homeschooling
Homeschooling continues to grow each year, and programs like Florida’s scholarship initiatives are expanding educational choice for families.
Florida has even announced plans to remove the cap on scholarship funding by the 2027–2028 school year, which means even more families may have access to these opportunities in the future.
As hybrid programs, enrichment opportunities, and learning communities continue to grow, families will have more ways than ever to customize their child’s education.
This flexibility is exciting—but it also makes thoughtful planning even more important.
Is Modern Homeschooling Right for Your Family?
Modern homeschooling may be a good fit for your family if:
• you want more flexibility in your child’s education
• your child thrives in smaller or more personalized learning environments
• you want to combine programs, tutors, or enrichment opportunities
• you want learning tailored to your child’s pace and interests
• you feel overwhelmed trying to navigate all the options on your own
For many families, homeschooling isn’t the difficult part — the logistics are.
If you’re considering homeschooling or simply trying to make sense of the many options available, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
Through consultations, I help families organize the structure and logistics of homeschooling so their education plan feels clear, manageable, and sustainable.
